Trigeminal Neuralgia Facial Pain and Hemifacial Spasm
Dr. Mericle and Dr. Ulm are nationally recognized leaders in the treatment of Trigeminal neuralgia and have extensive experience performing surgery for hemifacial spasm. Together they have one of the largest experiences treating Trigeminal Neuralgia in the southeastern United States and they both trained under one of the world’s foremost experts in these diseases, Dr.Albert Rhoton who has since retired from active practice. Dr. Mericle and Dr. Ulm have also served as course directors where they have taught other Neurosurgeons how to diagnose and treat patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia.
Brain Aneurysms and Vascular Malformations
Dr. Mericle and Dr. Ulm have extensive experience treating brain vascular malformations, cerebral aneurysms and the complications that can arise when aneurysms rupture. They are experts at all facets of treatment including: cerebral angiography, embolization, surgical resection and radiosurgery.
Dr. Mericle served as head of cerebrovascular neurosurgery at Vanderbilt University for eight years where he performed more aneurysm treatments than any other neurosurgeon within the department.
Dr. Ulm built an endovascular neurosurgery service at the Medical Center of Central Georgia and was the only dual trained vascular neurosurgeon in New Orleans during his tenure at LSU.
They are experts who have been sought out by other neurosurgeons to provide training in aneurysm treatment and have published papers and book chapters on the origin, natural history, treatment and complications related to cerebral aneurysms.
Brain Tumors and General Neurosurgery
Minimally invasive endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms and vascular disease. Multimodality treatments for brain tumors including Radiosurgery, Computer-guided Craniotomies, and Stereotactic Surgery. Skull Base Expertise and Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery.
Dr. Mericle and Dr. Ulm have extensive experience treating brain tumors and have expertise in both surgical and radiosurgical therapy. Dr. Ulm served as head of Skull base surgery at LSU prior to joining Neurological Institute. He has extensive experience with microsurgical anatomy and microsurgical techniques and has been a course instructor at over a dozen meetings where other neurosurgeons attended to learn from his experiences.
Spinal Disease and Peripheral Nerve Disease
Comprehensive assessment and conservative management of all patients. Surgical and non-surgical treatments as well as minimally invasive techniques available. A referral DOES NOT always mean surgery.
Vascular Disease and Stroke Prevention
Many treatments available to PREVENT stroke. Carotid stenting and surgery, Intracraial Angioplasty and Stenting, and Brain Bypass.
Dr. Ulm and Dr. Mericle are two of the most experienced neurovascular surgeons in Tennessee. Together they have performed dozens of brain bypass operations (EC-IC bypass) and EDAS revascularization procedures. Dr. Ulm founded the Moya-Moya clinic at the Medial Center of Central Georgia and re-started the bypass program at LSU in New Orleans. Dr. Mericle performed the vast majority of all EC-IC bypasses done at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Childrens hospital over the past decade.
